The McCoys Hang on Sloopy

Taylor's Solo Tour is still going strong. The Soul Patrol is loving each show. I have yet to see Taylor Hicks Live. April 24th in Columbus Ohio I will finally get to see Taylor. To say that the months of waiting have been dragging by is an understatement. However, reading everyone's wonderful recaps of the concerts and their journeys following Taylor on tour are very entertaining and keep those of us waiting for our turn in the know of what to expect. Even though Taylor changes every show in some way it is a guarantee that whatever he does will be something great to enjoy and talk about later.

Some have discussed what they think Taylor will sing when he comes to their town. Taylor seems to sing a song that relates to each city he plays in. So I tried to think what could Taylor possibly sing in Columbus, our state rock song is Hang on Sloopy. Why is this song our state song, you might ask, the answer is this.
In 1965, an Ohio-based rock group known as the McCoys reached the top of the national record charts with "Hang On Sloopy," composed by Bert Russell and Wes Farrell, and that same year, John Tagenhorst, then an arranger for the Ohio State University Marching Band, created the band's now-famous arrangement of "Sloopy," first performed at the Ohio State-Illinois football game on October 9, 1965; and Hang On Sloopy" is of particular relevance to members of the Baby Boom Generation, who were once dismissed as a bunch of long-haired, crazy kids, but who now are old enough and vote in sufficient numbers to be taken quite seriously. Hang on Sloopy," became the Ohio state rock song in November 1985.

This song is played by school bands before football games in Ohio and at pep rallys. Ohio State University's band continues to play this song. It is highly unlikely that you will find a Ohioian that does not recognize Hang on Sloopy. Will Taylor sing the song? One can never tell. Taylor is full of surprises. If he does I am sure the crowd will love the tribute and the way Taylor Taylorizes it.

I have posted two Videos of Hang on Sloopy. One is above is TheMcCoys The one below is OSU MARCHING BAND
